Polynucleotides are one of the more genuinely interesting developments in regenerative aesthetics. Rather than filling or freezing anything, they work at a cellular level to restart the skin's own repair processes.

The active ingredient is a highly purified DNA fragment. Once placed in the skin it up-regulates fibroblast cells, which are the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, while also mopping up free radicals that drive visible ageing.

The result is structural rather than cosmetic. Skin becomes more resilient, better hydrated and better able to hold its own shape, which is why it suits thin or fragile skin and the under-eye area particularly well.

What happens

  1. Skin assessment

    Lauren assesses skin thickness, hydration, barrier condition and the areas that concern you, then confirms whether polynucleotides are the right starting point.

  2. Treatment

    A series of small injections placed across the treatment area using a very fine needle. The appointment takes around forty-five minutes including preparation.

  3. The course

    Three to four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. The regenerative effect is cumulative, so the course matters more than any single session.

  4. Maintenance

    Results typically hold for six to nine months, after which a single maintenance session keeps the improvement in place.

Aftercare

  • Expect small bumps at the injection points for 24 to 48 hours
  • Mild redness or swelling is normal and settles quickly
  • Avoid make-up on the treated area for 12 hours
  • Skip saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for 24 hours
  • Use gentle skincare and a daily SPF while the skin remodels

What exactly do polynucleotides do?

They are injectable skin boosters made from highly purified DNA fragments that help repair, hydrate and improve skin quality from within. They work at a cellular level by up-regulating fibroblast cells, triggering natural collagen and elastin production while actively neutralising free radicals.

Are polynucleotides the same as filler?

No. They do not add volume or change your face shape. Filler sits in the skin and creates structure physically. Polynucleotides stimulate your own skin to repair and rebuild, so the change comes from your own tissue rather than from the product.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually three to four sessions spaced about two to four weeks apart. The effect is cumulative, so the course is what delivers the result. A single session on its own will not do much.

Are they safe for all skin types?

Polynucleotides are biocompatible and generally very well tolerated, which makes them suitable for most skin types following a thorough consultation. Lauren assesses your suitability at your first appointment.

Is there downtime?

Minimal. You may have small bumps, redness or mild swelling for 24 to 48 hours. Most people are comfortable going about their normal day, though many prefer to book before a quiet evening.

How long do the results last?

Typically six to nine months following a full course, with maintenance sessions recommended to sustain the improvement.

Can polynucleotides be used under the eyes?

Yes, and it is one of the areas where they perform best. The under-eye skin is thin and often crepey, and polynucleotides improve quality and resilience there without adding the volume that filler would.

How do they compare with Profhilo?

Both are biostimulators rather than fillers, but they work differently. Polynucleotides focus on cellular repair and skin regeneration. Profhilo is hyaluronic acid based and focuses on deep hydration and laxity. Lauren will recommend one over the other, or a sequence of both, depending on what your skin actually needs.

Does it hurt?

There is some discomfort, as with any injectable treatment, but the needles are very fine and the sensation is brief. Most people find it very manageable.

Can I combine polynucleotides with other treatments?

Yes. They pair particularly well with microneedling and with lines and wrinkles treatment, since they address different things. Lauren will sequence treatments so each one has room to work.

Are polynucleotides suitable if I have sensitive skin?

Often yes. Because they support barrier repair rather than aggressively resurfacing, they are frequently a good option for reactive skin. This is assessed individually at consultation.

What should I do before my appointment?

Come with clean skin and no make-up if possible, avoid alcohol the night before to reduce bruising risk, and let Lauren know about any medication or supplements you take, particularly blood thinners.
